African players abroad Zambia’s Mutandwa makes history after debut for Cagliari

Zambian striker Kingstone Mutandwa made his debut in the Italian Serie A for Cagliari Calcio FC, who defeated Empoli 1-0 on Sunday.

The 21-year-old former Atletico Lusaka striker was subbed on in the 87th minute, having previously appeared on the bench for the Cagliari first team against Bologna and Frosinone. Mutandwa’s debut on Sunday made him only the second Zambian in history to play in the Italian top division, after US Lecce winger Lameck Banda.

He joined Cagliari on a permanent deal from Zambian second-tier side Athletico Lusaka last season. This came after scoring 16 goals in 22 games in the Zambia National Division. Following his transfer, he has been playing for Cagliari’s U19 team, scoring five goals in 18 games this season. Mutandwa also featured for the Cagliari first team and scored in a 5-0 pre-season friendly match against Carbonia Calcio.

In 2022, Banda made history by becoming the first Zambian to play in Serie A. The Chipolopolo rapid winger has scored four goals and six assists in 55 appearances across all competitions for Lecce, Mutandwa will now hope to make more first-team appearances and score in the Italian league, as Banda did.
