Olympic Games Super Falcons Breaks Olympics Games Curse After 16 Years

With a 1-0 aggregate victory over South Africa, the Super Falcons of Nigeria have finally broken their Olympic curse, which dates back to 2008.

The match’s first leg was played at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abuja last Friday, and the nine-time African Queens won thanks to a penalty kick from Rasheedat Ajibade.

Algerian referee Mehat Ghada had called a foul inside the area on Banyana Banyana defender Noko Matlou in the 40th minute.

The match’s final leg was played at Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria, and South Africa had to win.

Thembi Kgatlana and Jermaine Seoposenwe, the twin strikers, were unable to receive enough support to break past the Super Falcons’ defence wall despite having a home advantage.

Rather, Halimatu Ayinde, Rasheedat Ajibade, and Grace Kanu’s passes to Jennifer Echegini and Chimendou Ihezuo in the midfield helped them mount the majority of the Super Falcons’ attacks.

In the 40th minute of the last leg, Kanu had a fantastic chance to give the Super Falcons the lead when he failed to connect properly on a floating ball that was given from the right wing.

They managed to maintain their lead and earn their Olympic qualifying in spite of this.

Nigeria will compete in the July and August Olympics in Paris, along with Brazil, Japan, and world champions Spain in Group C.
