UEFA EUROPA LEAGUE UEL: Marseille Defeat Benfica In penalties To Reach Last Four

Faris Moumbagna’s late second-half goal tied the tie at 2-2 on aggregate, but Olympique de Marseille prevailed in a penalty shootout to go to the Europa League semi-finals for the first time in six years on Thursday.

Marseille won the match after all four of their penalty takers scored, with Benfica’s Angel Di Maria missing the opening kick of the shootout after it struck the post and goalie Pau Lopez saving Antonio Silva’s attempt.

Lopez made the first of two crucial saves for Marseille in extra time, blocking Di Maria’s effort that would have taken the Portuguese champions closer to victory.

Eleven minutes into the match, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s cross from the left was met with a close-range header by Moumbagna, giving the home team the lead.

In the semi-finals, the Ligue 1 team will play Atalanta, who lost 1-0 at home against Liverpool but advanced with a 3-1 aggregate triumph following their unexpected win at Anfield last week.
