DR Congo DR Congo Appoint Former Egypt Coach Hector Cuper

DR Congo have appointed former Egypt national and Valencia manager Hector Cuper to be their upcoming head coach. Argentine news reports the information.

DR Congo failed to qualify for the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals for the first time since the 2012 edition in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea.

They missed out on the top two spots of their qualifying group by just one points under former head coach Christian Nsengi-Biembe.

As they now prepare for the 2022 World Cup qualifiers, DR Congo have decided to appoint former Egypt national team head coach Hector Cuper in attempt to reach the finals for the first time since 1974, according to TyC Sports.

Cuper was in charge of the Pharaohs between 2015 and 2018. And despite some criticism due to the team’s unattractive style of play, he was able to reach the 2017 AFCON final. And he qualified for their first World Cup in 28 years.

After a disappointing display in Russia, with them losing all three of their group stage matches, the Egyptian FA decided to part ways with the two-time UEFA Champions League finalist.

Uzbekistan almost immediately appointed the 65-year-old manager. Cuper had a bright start with Uzbekistan as he was able to guide them to the round of 16 in the 2019 AFC Asian Cup, where they lost to Australia on penalties.

However, he was sacked after a poor start to their 2022 World Cup qualifying campaign. And he has been without a job since September 2019.

DR Congo share group with Benin, Madagascar and Tanzania for their World Cup qualifiers. Their first game set to take place next September against Benin.
