AFCON Edouard Mendy receives both AFCON 2021 Best Goalkeeper and FIFA The Best Awards at Olembe

Edouard Mendy claimed the AFCON 2021 Best Goalkeeper Award after Senegal won their first-ever Africa Cup of nations title on Sunday evening ahead of seven-times Champions Egypt on penalties (4-2).

Mendy who missed Senegal’s first two games in the tournament against Zimbabwe (1-0) and Guinea (0-0) due to Covid-19, started the competition from the group stages’ matchday 3rd against Malawi (0-0).

Then, he remained in the sticks for Aliou Cisse’s team until the end of the competition making 3 clean sheets in 5 appearances.

He deservedly won the tournament’s Best Goalkeeper Award even though some thinks Egypt’s hero Abou Gabal ‘Gabaski’ would have deserved it as well.

Furthermore, Edouard Mendy received his FIFA The Best Award of the Best Goalkeeper in 2021 from the hands of compatriot and FIFA Secretary General Fatma Samoura and the lausanne-based organisation’s president Gianni Infantino.

The 29-year old shot stopper has had a wonderful year in 2021 with the triumph in UEFA Champions league, a competition in which he gathered 9 clean sheets in 12 appearances.

He later won the UEFA Super Cup against Villarreal. A well-deserved award for the former Rennes goalkeeper wo was snubbed in the Ballon d’Or shortlist.
