When Algeria plays Ethiopia at the Stade de Baraki on Tuesday, they will be attempting to make history by being the first team to qualify for the knockout round of the 2022 African Nations Championship CHAN.

Against Mozambique on Saturday in their group A opener, the Walia Ibexes were unfortunate not to have earned all three points, and they will now try to restart their title hopes.

With a spirited 1-0 victory over Libya in the tournament’s opening match last Friday, Algeria began their quest for the first-ever Africa Nations Championship title.

After a scoreless first half at Baraki, the game’s game-changing goal came from a penalty kick three minutes before the hour mark, executed expertly by Aimen Mahious to give the home team an unbeatable start to the campaign.

Madjid Bougherra will be pleased with his team’s performance on opening day and hopes it may serve as a springboard for a run to the title after a rocky pre-tournament campaign in which they failed to win any of their three warm-up matches.

Algeria’s objective is to improve on their one and only CHAN appearance from 2011, when they lost to Sudan 1-0 in the third-place playoff after falling to Angola on penalties in the semifinals.

While Mozambique held Ethiopia to a somewhat deflating goalless draw in their group opener on Saturday, Ethiopia was guilty of lacking creativity.

The Walia Ibexes had the majority of the possession and were in control for the majority of the game, but they were unable to take advantage of numerous clear-cut opportunities before settling for a split of the spoils.

This came after a 1-0 loss to Morocco in their final exhibition game on January 7 at Rabat’s Mohammed VI Football Academy thanks to a late goal from Saifeddine Alami.
