Manchester United Martinez To Miss The Rest Of The Season Due To Injury

Manchester United have confirmed that Lisandro Martinez will miss the rest of the season after breaking his metatarsal in Thursday’s Europa League draw with Sevilla.

Martinez was carried off the field by Sevilla’s Marcos Acuna and Gonzalo Montiel, his Argentina teammates, after collapsing in the closing stages at Old Trafford.

United were forced to finish the quarter-final first-leg clash with 10 men after Erik ten Hag had already used all of his substitutes, and Sevilla took advantage to salvage a 2-2 draw from a two-goal deficit.

Martinez will not play for the Red Devils again in 2022-23, the club announced on Friday.

Lisandro Martinez has been ruled out for the remainder of the season after fracturing a metatarsal bone in his foot,” a club statement said.

“However, the Argentinian defender is expected to make a full recovery in time to be ready for the start of next season.”

Martinez was not United’s only casualty on Thursday, as Raphael Varane was replaced at halftime after suffering a knock, and the Frenchman is expected to be out “for a few weeks.”

Martinez and Varane have formed a strong defensive partnership this season, starting in 16 of United’s 29 Premier League games during Ten Hag’s first season in charge.

The injuries are a huge blow for United, who will look to boost their chances of finishing in the top four at Nottingham Forest on Sunday before facing Sevilla again on Thursday.

With Martinez and Varane out, Ten Hag is likely to rely on Harry Maguire — who scored against Sevilla late on — and Victor Lindelof in United’s upcoming games.

United are already without top scorer Marcus Rashford due to a muscle injury, and Bruno Fernandes will be suspended for next week’s trip to Seville.
