African players abroad Olunga, Wanyama, and Kenya’s top stars so far in this season

Kenya international Michael Olunga led the way as he guided Al Duhail to lift the Qatar Stars League title in the current season.

Below Africa Top Sports profiles some of Kenya’s top players.

Michael Olunga – Al Duhail

The 29-year-old capped off the season as the Golden Boot winner with 22 goals ahead of Al Arabi striker Omar Al Somah, who managed 19 goals. He helped Duhail to win their league title with 51 points from 22 matches, two more than second-placed Al Arabi.

The former Gor Mahia striker was voted for the Best Player of the Season award in Qatar but he was beaten to it by Tunisia international Youssef Msakni, who features for Al Arabi, on loan from Al-Duhail.

He, however, ended the season with the coveted Mansour Muftah Award for topping the scorers’ chart for the second consecutive year. Last season, Olunga clinched the Golden Boot award ahead of Al Sadd and Ghana international Andre Ayew after notching 24 goals from 22 appearances.

Eric Johana Omondi – Muangthong United

Since moving to Muangthong United in the Thai top flight, the former Mathare United midfielder has been a revelation under manager Mario Gjurovski. The 28-year-old is currently on nine league goals from 23 appearances.

Out of the 23, he has managed to start in 17 fixtures and came off the bench on six occasions. His display has seen Muangthong remain fourth on the 16 team-table with 50 points from 30 matches. They have managed 14 wins, eight draws and suffered eight defeats.

Joseph Okumu – KAA Gent

The towering Okumu moved to Gent from Swedish outfit IF Elfsborg and he has gone ahead to cement his place in the starting line-up for the last two seasons.

This season alone, he has so far featured in 29 matches, scored one goal, and provided one assist. His goal came in the 3-0 victory against AS Eupen on March 19.

Last season, the former Chemelil Sugar defender made 31 First Division A appearances for Gent and scored one goal. Okumu moved to Gent in July 2021 from Elfsborg, for whom he made 34 league appearances in total, providing one assist.

Victor Wanyama – CF Montreal

The former Harambee Stars captain extended his contract with Montreal at the end of last season and he has gone ahead to keep his position in the Major Soccer League (MLS) outfit.

Though he is yet to score for Montreal this campaign, he has managed 11 appearances with his last fixture coming in the 2-0 victory against Toronto on May 13 where he featured for 80 minutes.

Last season, he played 34 matches for Montreal, scored one goal, and provided three assists. He moved to Montreal in March 2020 from Premier League side Tottenham, where he managed 69 appearances in the league, scored six goals, and provided one assist.

Richard Odada – Philadelphia Union II

The 22-year-old is integrating well in the MLS Next Pro where he moved to after signing for Philadelphia Union II in September 2022 from Philadelphia Union.

He has so far accumulated 510 minutes of playing time and been selected in the starting XI in all six of these appearances across the team’s seven fixtures.

The last MLS appearance for Odada came on May 7 for Philadelphia Union II versus New York RB II; a meeting he played for 90 minutes in a 2-1 victory. Last season, Odada featured in two games for Philadelphia Union II.

Eric Ouma – AIK Fotboll

The Harambee Stars left-back has so far this season managed seven matches for AIK in the Allsvenskan and is yet to find the back of the net. Last season, he featured for 26 matches, scored two goals, and provided two assists.

Before joining AIK in January 2020, Otieno made 19 league appearances in total at Vasalund, scoring one goal. AIK are currently sitting 13th on the 16 team-table with six points from eight matches. They have managed one win, drawn three, and lost four times.

Lucas Opiyo – AFC Leopards

The Ingwe goalkeeper has been the reason his side have not conceded many goals like it was the case last season. AFC have only conceded 19 goals in the FKF Premier League, with Posta Rangers and Kenya Police the teams to have conceded fewer goals in 17.

The former Posta Rangers custodian was in great form as Ingwe finally ended a seven-year wait to defeat rivals Gor Mahia 2-1 in the Mashemeji derby on Sunday.
