Kenya FKF Cup: Tusker strike late to stun Ulinzi Stars and reach final

Tusker maintained their push to win a double this season after a late goal enabled them to defeat Ulinzi Stars 1-0 and reach the final of the Mozzart Bet FKF Cup at Nyayo Stadium on Saturday.

After a scrappy first half that did not produce goals, the Brewers continued to attack the Soldiers but they were forced to wait until the 90th minute when substitute Eric Otieno grabbed the winner.

Ulinzi defenders switched off at the back and Otieno sneaked in from the far post to nod the ball past the stranded goalkeeper Sylvain Ricks for the lone goal of the fixture.

The result means Tusker under coach Robert Matano are firmly in the race for two trophies – the FKF Cup and the Premier League.

In the league, they are topping the 18-team table with 64 points from 34 matches, one point more than their rivals Gor Mahia, who have played the same number of matches.

On Friday, Matano sent a clear warning that his side is in the hunt for a double this campaign just like Manchester City in England.

“If Pep Guardiola is going for a double with Manchester City, why not me with Tusker?” posed Matano.

“I will not leave any title for anybody because that is not anywhere in football. I’m determined to win the league and Mozzart Bet Cup. Even if some coaches who are my enemies have combined forces against me and are now supporting one another I wouldn’t be cowed.

“My focus is on my work and winning my matches.”

Tusker will now face the winner between AFC Leopards and Kakamega Homeboyz in the final.

Apart from taking home Ksh2 million from the title sponsors, the winner of the domestic competition will earn a direct ticket to represent Kenya in the Caf Confederation Cup for next season.
