Manchester City Guardiola Likens Winning Premier League Title To Tennis Game

The pressure of trying to win the Premier League title has been compared by Pep Guardiola to that of a Wimbledon winning serve.

If second-place Arsenal loses at Nottingham Forest on Saturday, Guardiola’s team would win the title for the fifth time in six seasons.

In the event that Arsenal triumphs, City can clinch the championship by defeating Chelsea at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday or by winning one of their last two matches against Brighton or Brentford.

If City wins the championship this weekend, it will be the culmination of a spectacular run that saw them beat Real Madrid on Wednesday and go to the Champions League final against Inter Milan.

Guardiola is aware that the pressure of securing one more victory in the title fight can be extremely taxing on a squad, similar to how tennis players might experience jitters when a Wimbledon victory is within reach.

“Now is coming the most difficult thing.

Tennis players say to serve to win Wimbledon is the most difficult one,” Guardiola told reporters on Friday.

“On Sunday, the game is in our hands to win the most important competition. We’re lucky to have the chance to finish at home with our people. We have to take it.

“Of course we are satisfied to be able to play the Champions League final but it’s non-stop.”

Guardiola has firsthand knowledge of how challenging it can be to win a title competition.

After trailing Aston Villa by two goals on the final day of the previous campaign, City narrowly avoided losing the championship to Liverpool by scoring three goals in the final 14 minutes.
