Tanzania Yanga SC celebrates 29th trophy at rivals Simba SC’s home

Young Africans (Yanga SC) taunted their rivals Simba SC after they paraded the Tanzanian Premier League trophy in their backyard on Saturday.

The Jangwani Street-based giants were handed their 29th league trophy on Friday after defeating Tanzania Prisons 2-0 in their final fixture of the season at Sokoine Stadium in Mbeya.

The outcome meant Yanga, who had already won the title with two matches to spare, finished the season top of the table with 78 points from 30 matches, five clear of second-placed and rivals Simba, who amassed 73 points.

Yanga paraded their success on Saturday and it started at Julius Nyerere International Airport (JNIA) in Dar es Salaam where a plane carrying the team from Mbeya received a water salute.

From the airport, players together with some management members paraded the trophy using a top-open bus decorated with the traditional colours of the club, yellow and green. However, the climax saw them turn Msimbazi Street, home to Simba at Kariakoo in Dar es Salaam, into celebrations.

The street which is dominated by red and white was taken over by yellow and green, as they paraded their title. The celebrations almost got nasty when suspended Yanga Information Officer Haji Manara held up the trophy at the top of the bus joyfully showing it to Simba fans waving their team’s flag from the top of the club’s building.

This was the second title for Yanga to lift this season since they had won the Community Shield by beating Simba 2-1 at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium and they will be eyeing the third title when they face Azam FC in the Azam Federation Cup final at the Mkwakwani Stadium in Tanga on Monday.
