FIFA World Cup Kenya drop five places as Tanzania climb in men’s Fifa rankings

Kenya dropped to position 105 in the latest Fifa (International Federation of Football Association) men’s world rankings released on June 29, 2023.

The East African nation scored 1191.07 points, a drop-down of 9.11 points. This was a drop from position 100 in the last rankings, further putting a dent in the country’s rating as a top footballing nation. The drop is attributed to the 1-0 defeat the men’s national team Harambee Stars suffered to lowly Mauritius in the recent Port Louis Four-Nation tournament, where they managed a 1-0 victory against Pakistan.

Meanwhile, Tanzania climbed up seven steps in the rankings, the feat that was buoyed by their 1-0 victory over Niger in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying fixture at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium.

The latest standings saw Taifa Stars taking the 123rd place from the 130th position it occupied last month. Since 2020, Tanzania has been doing well in the rankings, as it elevated from 135th place in 2020 to 131st in 2021.

Tanzania maintained the same position in 2022 before the graph improved in April 2023 by a step to 130th place prior to the recent seven-place climb. Tanzania’s highest ranking was 65th, while its lowest ranking was 175th.

In the overall top in men’s ranking are Morocco, who lead in Africa, but they are thirteenth in world rankings, followed by Senegal who are placed 18th in world rankings, and the third for Africa is Tunisia, who are placed 31 globally. Algeria follows at the 33rd and Egypt occupies the 34th place.
