Kenya Kakamega Homeboyz outwit Tusker to seal FKF Cup glory

Kakamega Homeboyz were crowned the 2023 FKF Cup champions after pulling off a 1-0 upset of Tusker FC in the final at Kasarani Stadium on Saturday.

After a 0-0 result in the first half, Kevin Amwayi scored the winner in the 73rd minute to settle the tight contest and seal a first-ever major trophy for Homeboyz. This goal not only secured the win for Homeboyz but also propelled them to a well-deserved spot in the prestigious Caf Confederation Cup.

Additionally, Kakamega Homeboyz claimed a substantial prize of Ksh 2 million from the tournament’s title sponsors. Homeboyz coach Patrick Odhiambo was left in tears after guiding the side to success.

I can’t explain my feeling now,” a sobbing Odhiambo told Africa Top Sports when asked to explain how they managed to beat Tusker, adding: “We are happy to win the trophy and I want to thank my players for their dedication, thank our club chairman Cleophas Shimanyula for the support he accorded us.

“It was not easy to achieve this fete but I thank God we crossed the line. Tusker is a good team, they looked dangerous in the first half but we managed to contain them and when we got the chance to score, Amwayi did exactly that, though we should have scored more after.”

Meanwhile, AFC Leopards finished third in the tournament after defeating Ulinzi Stars 1-0 through Eugene Mukangula’s goal in the 67th minute. During the individual awards ceremony, AFC Leopards’ Levis Opiyo was honored as the Best Goalkeeper. Tusker’s Stewart Omondi earned got Top Scorer award. Finally, Kakamega Homeboyz’s Moses Shummah was recognised as the Most Valuable Player (MVP).

While Homeboyz will go for Confederation Cup, Gor Mahia will be Kenya’s flag bearers in the Champions League after winning a record-extending 20th Premier League title.
