Kenya Blow for Gor Mahia as keeper Gad Mathews ruled out for months

Gor Mahia coach Johnathan McKinstry has disclosed first-choice goalkeeper Gad Mathews will be out for up to two months after undergoing a minor procedure.

“Gad Mathews had some minor surgery recently and just started training yesterday (Friday). But he is probably another week or two weeks away from training with the rest of the group; to be honest, he is about six or seven weeks from playing,” he said.

He added: “My honest assessment of Gad’s recovery is just slow. He was there at the training but he cannot dive nor make saves, so we have to let him heal properly.”

K’Ogalo kicked off their season with a 0-0 draw against Sofapaka in a match McKinstry was left a frustrated man accusing Batoto ba Mungu of parking the bus after taking the lead in the first half. “I believe we are not 100 percent yet, but it is coming, there is no doubt about that, but the game probably went the way Sofapaka wanted it to, to frustrate us, to get a goal on a counter-attack, coupled with our own mistake, and then for them to try and sit in and park the bus and play counter-attack, but I think a draw is probably a fair result but we are a little bit disappointed not to win it at the end,” said McKinsty.

He continued: “We then conceded a very sloppy goal, an own goal off a long throw, we need to be better, our positioning needs to be better in terms of going to attack that ball rather than back peddling like Geoffrey (Ochieng) was.”

Gor Mahia will next take on Ulinzi Stars in their second fixture of the season on Saturday.
