Kenya Sports CS Namwamba confirms FKF to hold elections on February 24

Sports CS Ababu Namwamba has assured football stakeholders that the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) will hold elections in February 2024.

“Due date of election must be respected. The process must include inclusivity and all issues must be addressed and respected. The elections must be on February 24, 2024. The process must adhere to the Sports Act,” Namwamba, who was appearing before the Senate Committee on Labour and Social Welfare on Thursday,” said as quoted by Nairobi News, adding: “Elections of FKF must be held on the due date. That is not negotiable. I have instructed the Registrar of Sports to form a technical committee and start preparing for a free, fair, and verifiable election.

The Committee which is chaired by West Pokot Senator Julius Murgor incorporates other members such as Enock Wambua (Kitui), George Mbugua (nominated), Steward Madzayo (Kilifi), Mohamed Faki (Mombasa) and Samson Cherargei (Nandi).

Namwamba added: “I’m in direct contact with Fifa and fear of suspension shall not make us not take action. These international federations are protective of their member associations. We have armed Fifa with all the issues. I told their representatives when they visited the country that we expect nothing from Fifa but they must walk with us. There is no middle ground on this because Kenyan football must be fixed and if they will consider that government interference, then so be it.”

Meanwhile, the Nairobi County Football Association have supported Namwamba’s call for a February election, In a statement from secretary Wilfred Marori they said: “We agree with the statement by the cabinet secretary for sports that FKF elections will be conducted February 24 (only two weeks extension from our proposal), that the sports registrar to form a technical committee to Kickstart the process of elections, that we will be incorporated in the whole process, that FIFA have been contacted over the same and they’ll give a recommendation of forming a normalization committee as requested by us and the CS.”
