Uganda Fred Amaku with brace as Maroons sink KCCA FC, Vipers SC held

Maroons talisman Fred Amaku scored a brace as the visitors beat hosts KCCA FC 2-1 at the MTN Omondi Stadium in Lugogo on Tuesday.

Shaban Muhammad scored what turned out to be KCCA’s consolation in a match where youngster Usama Arafat missed a penalty when it could have given the home side the lead. This after Uganda Premier League champions, Vipers SC, were frustrated with a goalless draw away in Mbarara against the city hosts. As a result, Maroons dislodged Vipers from third place while KCCA, who have now lost all their two opening matches, are third from the bottom of a 16-team table.

Maroons have now won two of their three opening matches to sit beautifully third on seven points, just two behind early pace-setters Kitara and BUL. Vipers also have seven points, but the Venoms are pushed into fourth place because of an inferior goal difference with Maroons.

Mbarara City, who have drawn two and lost one of their games, are 12th on the log with two points. Back at Lugogo, Maroons showed their intent early when Amaku gave them a 23rd-minute lead. Shaban equalised for KCCA when he volleyed home on the stroke of halftime after Maroons failed to clear their lines on a deadball delivery.

KCCA had a golden opportunity to take the lead for the first time in the match when they were awarded a penalty for a handball in the area midway the second half, but youngster Arafat missed it. They were made to duly pay when Amaku restored the lead for Maroons 10 minutes from full time. The scoreline never changed.
