Rwanda Gitego’s late strike earns Marines FC point vs Rayon Sports

An 86th-minute strike from substitute Arthur Gitego helped Marines FC record a 2-2 draw with Rayon Sports at Umuganda Stadium on Saturday, October 7, in a Rwanda Premier League rescheduled game.

The match was earlier postponed because of a Rayon Sports CAF Confederation Cup game with Al Hilal Benghazi in which they lost on penalties and failed to progress. The fans at Umuganda Stadium in Gisenyi witnessed quality football on Saturday afternoon as a well-drilled Marines FC side came from behind twice to snatch a point.

The first half ended with Rayon leading Marines by 2-1. The second half saw Marines making two changes in the 60th minute as they sought to strengthen their attack. Ngoy Ilunga and Thaiba Mbonyumami gave way to Ishimwe Jean Réne and Gitego Arthur. The two players changed the phase of the game as they threatened the Rayon defense on countless occasions.

With just four minutes left on normal regulation time, Gitego fired a powerful strike to make it 2-2 after his side had taken control. It was the striker’s second goal this season as he also scored a late equalizer against APR in a 2-2 when he came on as a substitute. He pushed for a third goal to win the game for Marines but Rayon Skipper Abdul Rwatubyaye and his men at the back held him at bay.
