AFCON AFCON 2023: Zambia will learn from ‘our mistakes’ – Lameck Banda

Zambia international Lameck Banda believes the Chipolopolo had a great journey in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations despite failing to go past the group stages in Ivory Coast.

The Chipolopolo under Avram Grant needed a draw against Morocco’s Atlas Lions at the Laurent Pokou Stadium in San Pedro in their final Group F fixture to advance to the Round of 16, but the 2022 FIFA World Cup semi-finalists were keen to finish top in the group winning 1-0.

Morocco won and remained undefeated in Group F with seven points, while Zambia finished third with two points. In the other match, DR Congo drew 0-0 with Tanzania with the Leopards finishing second and advancing to the last 16.

“A great journey we had learning new things and learning from our mistakes. Even as we are out now we would like to say thank you all for your support. A lot has been learnt and we focus ahead,” said Banda, who plays for Serie A outfit Lecce, adding: “Having played the Afcon games is a huge privilege for me representing our beloved country Zambia and I keep on learning. The journey has just started and we keep on preparing more.

“At the end of the day football always wins despite the win or lose. We keep our heads up and we will continue to improve always. Thank you for the love, support, and encouragement.”
