FIFA U17 WORLD CUP FIFA U17 WOMEN: Uganda and Burundi shine to qualify for third round

Uganda and Burundi qualified for the third round in the FIFA U17 World Cup 2024 qualifiers.

Uganda Teen Cranes stopped Cameroon 3-1 in an away match played on Saturday to qualify on a 4-2 goal aggregate. Burundi who had stopped Botswana 4-1 in the first leg finished the job with a 2-0 win in the return leg played on Friday.

Slyvia Kabene gave Uganda the lead after 23 minutes at the Ngoa Stadium, Ekele in Yaounde after a defensive blunder by the hosts. Two minutes later Esther Nangendo doubled Uganda’s lead with a well-taken direct corner kick that beat the Cameroon goalkeeper.

After recess, the hosts tried to fight back and pulled a goal back through Sophie Leman two minutes into added time. But Agnes Nabukenya made it 3-1 for Uganda Teen Cranes. At the National Stadium in Gaborone, Adolphine Rumuri and Rahay-Roy Nzoyikorera scored to ensure Burundi completed the job qualifying on a 6-1 goal aggregate.

Uganda will now face the winner between Tanzania and Zambia in the third round, while Burundi will battle Djibouti who earned a walkover over Equatorial Guinea. Kenya who earned a walkover DR Congo will wait to face the winner between Ethiopia and South Africa in the third round.

The best three teams that win after the fourth round will qualify to represent Africa at the 2024 FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup to take place in the Dominican Republic.
