AFCON AFCON 2023: South Africa still leaving in the moment after Ivory Coast success – Williams

Ronwnen Williams

South Africa goalkeeper Ronwen Williams has admitted they are still in shock following their good run in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.

Bafana Bafana returned home with a silver medal after defeating DR Congo on penalties in the third-place playoff while Ivory Coast won the tournament following 2-1 victory against Nigeria in the final.

Williams, who was named the best goalkeeper of the tournament, after keeping five clean sheets at AFCON and only conceded three goals, said the achievement has not sunk in yet.

“We’re still living in the moment. It still feels unreal, what we’ve achieved over the last few weeks,” he said, adding: “We’ve seen all the messages and all the records that we’ve broken as a team. And, you know, of course, you’re in the moment and you’re thinking about the next game. You don’t look for praise or you go on and on about these things.”.

“You just want to do well in the next game. So, I’m just proud of the boys for the brotherhood, the brotherhood we had from day one. The spirit amongst us has been good. I think that is one of the reasons we’ve been successful is the spirit, the group, the togetherness.”
