UEFA EUROPA LEAGUE Aubameyang and Sarr on target as Marseille beat Shakhtar to seal last-16 spot

Marseille secured a place in the UEFA Europa League last-16 with a 5-3 aggregate victory over Shakhtar Donetsk, thanks to second-half goals from Ismaila Sarr and Geoffrey Kondogbia.

Despite Shakhtar taking the lead early through Georgiy Sudakov’s penalty, Marseille found an equaliser in the 23rd minute when Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, with a well-threaded pass from Amine Harit. Ismaila Sarr then put the French side in front of the tie with 15 minutes to go, easing the pressure on Marseille.

Just six minutes later, Kondogbia capitalised on a mix-up between Shakhtar’s captain Taras Stepanenko and goalkeeper Dmytro Riznyk to score the third goal and put the game to bed.

Despite Shakhtar’s late attempts to stage a comeback, Marseille held firm, securing their spot in the last-16 draw on Friday.
