The hosts quickly took advantage of their extra man, and in the 38th, Nathan Tella got enough room in the box to head in a cross from Alejandro Grimaldo.

Redeeming himself for his earlier error, Wirtz volleyed in their second goal in the 87th to complete the comeback and establish a new club record with a 25-game league winning streak.

After defeating Mainz 05 8-1 on Saturday, Xabi Alonso’s club, who has now gone undefeated in all 36 games this season in all competitions, is tied for first place with 57 points with champion Bayern Munich.

Bayer Leverkusen have now reclaimed their 10-point lead atop the table and maintain their chances of winning a maiden Bundesliga champion.
