Kenya Posta Rangers send coach Kamau on compulsory leave, Kawinzi takes charge

Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Premier League outfit Posta Rangers have sent their head coach John Kamau on compulsory leave and appointed his deputy Bernard Kawinzi to take charge until the end of the season.

The hammer on Kamau fell after the Mailmen suffered a humiliating 3-0 Premier League defeat against relegation-threatened Shabana FC at Homabay Stadium on Saturday. The defeat against Tore Bobe was the third straight for Posta, who had already lost – 1-0 to Kenya Police, 4-0 against Gor Mahia, and 5-1 against Kariobangi Sharks.

According to Posta CEO John Wakhu, the changes on the technical bench were necessitated by the fact Kamau had failed to control the dressing room hence the poor run of results which had seen the side lose their quest to win their first-ever league title.

“We have asked John (Kamau) to step aside, he had lost the dressing room, and losing three consecutive matches was our worst run so far this season, so we felt we needed someone else to take us forward for the remaining matches and his assistant Bernard (Kawinzi) will be tasked with the role,” said Wakhu.

Wakhu added: “Kamau has a running contract with us but we have placed him on a two-month compulsory leave and we will discuss his future with him when the season comes to a close, but we have faith in Kawinzi giving us the results we want, and we will give him the support to help us bounce back to winning ways in our next fixture and subsequent matches.”

These will be Kawinzi’s first task as a head coach having worked as an assistant to William Muluya at Kariobangi Sharks and at Posta. He will be in the dugout when Posta take on AFC Leopards in their next assignment on Sunday at Machakos Stadium.

Posta, who led most of the league’s first round and at some point looked like they would wrestle the title from K’Ogalo, are now sitting fifth on the 18-team table with 39 points from 25 matches. They have secured 11 wins, six draws and suffered eight defeats.

Apart from playing AFC, Posta’s remaining matches in the top-flight include a trip to face Bidco United, a fixture against FC Talanta, against Bandari in Mombasa, against Sofapaka in Nairobi, against Kakamega Homeboyz, against KCB, against Tusker before they concluded the season with an away fixture against Muhoroni Youth on June 23.
