Arsenal Aston Villa Dent Arsenal Premier League Title Hope

Arsenal lost 2-0 at home on Sunday against Aston Villa, who scored two goals in the last minute to put their Premier League title chase in limbo.

This gave the defending champions Manchester City the advantage in the Premier League title battle.

In the 84th minute, Villa substitute Leon Bailey scored from close range, and three minutes later, Ollie Watkins’ spectacular finish sent Gunners supporters running for the exits.

With six games remaining, Arsenal is in second place, two points behind City and level on points with third-place Liverpool following their first league defeat in 12 games.

After Liverpool’s 1-0 loss to Crystal Palace at home earlier on Sunday, City dominated Luton Town 5-1 on Saturday to increase their hopes of winning the league for an unprecedented fourth time in a row.

While the Gunners’ first goal seemed inevitable, Villa withstood pressure in the first half, with Kai Havertz firing straight at custodian Emi Martinez and Gabriel Jesus and Bukayo Saka hitting the side netting.

However, when the visitors significantly improved after the break, Watkins’ shot came the closest for Villa when it bounced off one post and went barely wide of the other, while Youri Tielemans’ rasping drive hit the crossbar then the post and amazingly stayed out.

Bailey’s header from Lucas Digne’s dangerous cross gave the visitors the lead, and Watkins’ stunning chip over goalkeeper David Raya ended the match and crushed Arsenal’s hearts.

The victory puts fourth-place Villa—despite having played one more game—three points ahead of Tottenham Hotspur and increases their prospects of making it into the Champions League the following season.
