Nigeria AFCON 2021 Qualifier: Super Eagles To Play Sierra-Leone November

The suspended 2021 Africa Cup of Nations between Nigerian Super Eagles and Sierra-Leone has been fixed for Novemeber by CAF.

Nigeria would have played a double -header against Sierra Leone in March 27 and 31 but it was suspended due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) have now given a go ahead for the AFCON 2021 qualifier to resume.

CAF, in a letter sent to the Nigeria Football Federation on Wednesday, signed by acting
General Secretary Abdelmounaim Bah confirmed the new dates.

According to a communique after CAF Emergency Committee meeting on Wednesday, the group stage of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 will also commence.

It reads as follows;

“The CAF Emergency Committee has approved the resumption date for qualifiers of the Total Africa Cup of Nations Cameroon 2021 and the group stage of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022.

“A busy schedule awaits the participating teams with double-headers from November 2020 through to November 2021 in the battle for spots to the final tournament of the two competitions.

“The schedules for the two competitions have had to be revised in light of the COVID-19 outbreak which halted many sporting activities across the continent and beyond for some time.

“For Cameroon 2021, the qualifiers resume on 9-17 November 2020 with the Day 3 & 4 matches whilst the penultimate and ultimate matches take place on 22-30 March 2021.

“The 40 teams in contention for the five slots for Qatar 2022 will commence the journey between 31 May and 15 June 2021 with the Day 1 & 2 matches.

“From 30 August till 7 September, the Day 3 & 4 matches are expected to take place with Day 5 & 6 matches fixed for 4-12 October 2021.

“The Playoff matches have been scheduled for 8-16 November 2021.

Meanwhile, CAF is monitoring the situation closely and working with the relevant authorities with regards to hosting of the matches, and will make pronouncements accordingly in the event of developments that will affect playing a match at the designated venue.

The new date will see Nigeria host fellow West African neighbour Sierra-Leone on November 9 in the first leg.

On November 17, the Super Eagles travel to Sierra-Leone for the return leg.

The three-time African champions currently too Group L of the AFCON 2021 qualifier with six points.

They won their first two opening games against Benin Republic and Lesotho.

In another development, CAF released new dates for qualifying matches for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

Matchday one and two fixtures will take place on May 31 and June 15, 2021.

The Super Eagles are drawn alongside Liberia, Cape Verde and Central African Republic in the second round of the 2022 World Cup qualifiers.
