African players abroad Mahrez’s goal not enough to save Manchester City from defeat

Algerian winger Riyad Mahrez came off the bench to score for Manchester City who went on to lose 3-2 to Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday evening.

It was Mahrez’s eighth Premier League goal in 19 games for the leaders City, whose title defence is now under serious threat.

Manager Pep Guardiola had called Mahrez to replace Raheem Sterling in the second half.

At that stage, the Premier League leaders trailed 2-1 after Kulusevski and Harry Kane goals for Spurs.

Mahrez then converted from the penalty spot one minute into added time to add on to Ike Gundogan’s 33rd minute goal that had canceled Kulusevski’s fourth minute goal for Spurs.

However, Kane had other ideas against his potential suitors.

The England striker scored his second goal of the night five minutes into added time after having earlier restored Spurs lead.

City still lead with six points behind second placed Liverpool who have a game in hand and could reduce the gap to just three points.

Spurs have completed a double over City having defeated them 1-0 in the opening game of the season.
