The 9-0 hammering of promoted Bournemouth by Liverpool at Anfield on Saturday equaled the record for the largest Premier League victory ever and gave Liverpool their first victory of the year.

Harvey Elliot and Luis Diaz both scored twice in the first six minutes to give the home team an early lead.

Trent Alexander Arnold of England scored a fantastic goal that arrowed into the top corner to give Liverpool a three-goal lead in the 28th minute, and Roberto Firmino added a fourth three minutes later.

Virgil van Dijk’s header from a corner gave Liverpool a fifth goal before halftime, making it the first time since 1958 that the Reds had scored five goals in the opening period of a league game.

The visitors were on the verge of an embarrassing defeat when Chris Mepham scored an own goal, and those concerns only grew after Firmino scored from close range and substitute Fabio Carvalho volleyed.

Liverpool had five minutes to become the first team to score 10 goals in a Premier League game after Diaz headed in the ninth goal. Bournemouth did just enough to avoid that humiliation, despite some late scares.

Four clubs have now scored nine goals in a Premier League game, including Manchester United twice and Leicester City, and with Saturday’s thumping, Liverpool tied their own league win record.
