AFCON-20 AFCON U20: Senegal Thrash Hosts Egypt 4-0 To Top Group A

After being destroyed 4-0 by savage Senegal on Saturday, the hosts Egypt were eliminated from the TotalEnergies U20 Africa Cup of Nations.

Before taking on Mahmoud Gaber’s Young Pharaohs in the last Group A match at the Cairo International Stadium, Senegal had already qualified for the quarterfinals.

Sulaymane Faye’s effort was the only serious opportunity in the first half before the game picked up in the second half after a tight tactical first half that ended without a goal.

Samba Diallo, the team’s captain, started the game on the bench while Mame Faye and Djibril Diarra were given starting spots by Malick Daf.

The Young Teranga Lions continued to have possession and opportunities in the Egyptian capital despite the changes.

At the restart, the Egyptians were more nimble and tried to push Senegal behind them. The hosts’ Khaled Awad nearly scored, but Senegal goalkeeper Landing Badji was alert.

On the hour mark, promising prospect Pape Diop beat the goalkeeper with a flying header to give the West Africans the lead.

When Ahmed Reda made a mistake in the Egyptian defense, substitute Ibou Sané took advantage of it to score the Teranga Lions’ second goal on 69 minutes.

Senegal took a well-earned 4-0 lead thanks to two goals from the in-form Pape Diop in the space of three minutes to complete his hat trick.

The attacker, who is based in Belgium, finished the game with poise and style.

Egypt and Mozambique, which fell 2-0 to Nigeria in Ismailia, were eliminated as a result.

Senegal won the group with 9 points, followed by Nigeria in second place with 6 points, and the two teams tied with one point each.
