FIFA World Cup FIFA U20WC: Italy strike late to end England’s dream

Italy knocked England out of the U20 Fifa World Cup thanks to a late winner in their last-16 contest at Estadio Ciudad de La Plata on Saturday.

The young Azzuri took a deserved in the 8th minute when Tommaso Baldanzi drilled home a loose ball inside the England box after Giuseppe Ambrosino’s fine through ball but the Young Lions hit back to level matters in the 24th minute courtesy of Alfie Devine from a Dane Scarlett’s cross.

However, in the 87th minute, Italy broke the hearts of the Young Lions’ fans and players when Cesare Casadei stepped up to convert from the penalty spot and send his side to the last eight.

The spot-kick was awarded by the video assistant referee following a Jarell Quansah handball. England’s journey saw them defeat Tunisia 1-0 in their group opener, overpowered Uruguay 3-2, and drew 0-0 against Iraq to reach the round of 16.

Meanwhile, Italy started off their group fixtures with a 3-2 victory against Brazil, lost 2-0 against African representatives Nigeria but recovered to beat Dominican Republic 3-0 and sail through to the last 16.

Italy will now face Colombia in the quarters at Estadio San Juan del Bicentenario on Sunday. Colombia reached the stage after hammering Slovakia 5-1.
