Top News Neymar Fine $3.3m By Brazilian Court For Environmental Violations

According to officials, Neymar, a Brazilian soccer player, was fined 16 million reais ($3.3 million) by a prosecutor for constructing a lake at his residence outside of Rio de Janeiro without a permit.

The council office in Mangaratiba levied four fines for “environmental violations in the construction of an artificial lake at the player’s mansion,” according to a statement.

“The sanctions add up to more than 16 million reais,” the statement said, a sum set out by the prosecutor’s office in Mangaratiba, a tourist area around 130 kilometres (80 miles) from Rio where the Paris Saint-Germain star has his mansion.

According to the authorities, among the “dozens of infractions” found were “carrying out work subject to environmental control without authorisation,” “capturing and diverting river water without authorisation,” and “removal of land and suppression of vegetation without authorisation.”

Neymar has 20 days to file an appeal against the fine, which was originally set at five million reais, or roughly $1 million.

Authorities discovered many environmental infractions at the opulent property, where workers were constructing an artificial lake and beach, on June 22, following accusations based on social media posts.

Authorities surrounded the area and issued a stop-all order, but Brazilian media said that Neymar hosted a party there and took a swim in the lake.
A request for comment from AFP was not answered by Neymar’s Brazilian press office.

The right ankle surgery that Neymar, 31, underwent in Doha in March is still healing.

Since the striker hasn’t played since February, concerns regarding his future at PSG have grown.

The Mangaratiba home was purchased by Neymar in 2016. According to Brazilian media, it has a heliport, spa, and gym and is situated on a plot of land measuring 10,000 square metres (107, 000 square feet).
