COSAFA COSAFA CUP: South Africa, Zambia To Rekindle Rivalry In Semi-Final

South Africa and Zambia will renew their rivalry when they meet in the second semifinal of the Cosafa Cup, set for the King Zwelithini Stadium in Durban on the evening of Friday 14 July 2023.

Kick-off is at 6 pm CAT and follows the first semifinal at the same venue between Malawi and Lesotho.

South Africa earned their place in the semis by finishing top of group A, securing pole position with a dramatic 2-1 win over Eswatini earlier in the week – with substitute Tshegofatso Mabasa scoring two late goals to seal a come-from-behind triumph.

Zambia, on the other hand, managed to enter the semifinals by finishing as the top runner-up. Even though Malawi beat them to the top spot in group B, their six points were more than Botswana’s (group A, four points) and Angola’s (group C, four points) totals.

Chipolopolo recently defeated Seychelles 4-2 with goals from Albert Kangwanda, Killiam Kanguluma, Golden Mashata, and Fredrick Mulambia.

There have been 23 head-to-head matches between South Africa and Zambia dating back to 1992. Nine victories have been claimed by each team, while five games have ended in draws.

The teams last faced off during the group stage of the 2021 Cosafa Cup, playing to a scoreless draw in Port Elizabeth’s Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium.
