Transfers Done Deal: Ghana defender Amartey joins Besiktas from Leicester

Ghana international Daniel Amartey has sealed a transfer move to Turkish Super League club Besiktas.

The 28-year-old Armartey was a key player for Leicester City in the past seasons but in the last campaign, he could not prevent them from being relegated from the Premier League and was later released.

“Our club signed a contract with Ghanaian defender Daniel Amartey as part of the transfer efforts for the 2023-24 season,” confirmed the Turkish side on their official website, adding: “We wish Daniel Amartey, who we believe will render important services to our club, great success with our glorious uniform, and present it to the public with our respect.”

The Black Stars made his first five appearances for Leicester during the title-winning season of 2015-16, following his debut in the 1-0 home victory over Norwich City in February 2016. Four other outings – in wins over Watford, Crystal Palace, and Sunderland, plus a 2-2 draw with West Ham United – allowed him to play a role in helping City win the league.

He featured much more heavily the following term, playing 35 times in all competitions for the Foxes. Amartey bagged his first goal in a City shirt in December of that season, scoring a late equaliser away at Stoke City to rescue a 2-2 draw.

Amartey also started for Leicester then under Brendan Rodgers won the FA Community Shield with a 1-0 victory over Manchester City in August 2021. Later, he also starred for the Foxes in a run to the semi-finals of the Uefa Europa Conference League – becoming a popular figure with the Blue Army.

Amartey has featured a number of times for his country at the senior level, including his first Africa Cup of Nations appearance in 2015. He played in all of the Black Stars’ group games as they finished tournament runners-up. He also represented Ghana at the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations, starting every game.
