Nigeria’s women’s national football team has secured a 3-2 victory against Australia at the 2023 Women’s World Cup on Thursday.

Australia’s Emily van Egmond opened the scoring in the 46th minute.

Nigeria’s Super Falcons were quick to respond, with Uchenna Kanu scoring her team’s first goal five minutes later in the 51st minute.

While the Australian squad out-possessed Zambia, having control over the ball for 63% of the game, the African team was determined to assert their dominance in the second half of the game.

Their efforts soon came to fruition after Osinachi Ohale scored Nigeria’s second goal in the 65th minute, followed by a third goal in the 72nd minute by Asisat Oshoala.

Meanwhile, Austalia’s Alanna Kennedy scored her team’s second goal during extra time.

The Group B game took place at the Suncorp Stadium in Australia, which is co-hosting the tournament with New Zealand between July 20 and August 20.

Today’s clash marked the first victory for an African country at the 2023 Women’s World Cup.

Nigeria’s opening game against Canada last week ended in a goalless draw.

Ahead of the game, the Nigerian team were heavy favorites to win, with a 67.3% chance at victory according to Opta analyst.

Meanwhile, Australia, who had a mere 12.1% chance of winning, won its opening game against Ireland 1-0 on June 20.

Following today’s game, Nigeria will lock horns with Ireland on July 31, while the hosts will play against Canada on the same day.
