athletics Kipyegon On Track For Double World Record in Budapest

Kenya’s Faith Kipyegon successfully navigated the qualifications for the women’s 5 000m final on Wednesday, keeping her quest for a world double in Budapest on track.

Just a day earlier, Kipyegon won the women’s 1500-meter third world championship with a devastating final lap, forcing Sifan Hassan to accept the bronze.

Both competitors breezed through their 5 000-meter heat with little issues, and they will compete again on Saturday in the final.

The occasion is Hassan’s third. The Dutch runner, the current Olympic champion in the 5 000m, fell only metres from the finish line of the 10 000m last weekend before finishing third in the 1 500m.

In the capital of Hungary, an Ethiopian is also attempting a double.

Along with teammates Ejgayehu Taye, Freweyni Hailu, and Medina Eisa, Gudaf Tsegay, who took first place in the 10 000m after Sifan’s mishap, also qualified for the 5 000m final.

In case the east African distance powerhouses employ team tactics, Kipyegon will be joined by other countrymen Margaret Chelimo Kipkemboi, Beatrice Chebet, and Lilian Kasait Rengeruk.

This at least ensures equal numbers.
