athletics Danielle Williams Dethrones Amusan To claim 100m Hurldes Gold

Danielle Williams of Jamaica unexpectedly won the women’s 100-meter hurdles world championship on Thursday in Budapest.

Jasmine Camacho-Quinn of Puerto Rico, the reigning Olympic champion, finished second in 12.44 seconds, and Kendra Harrison of the United States took third in 12.46 seconds for the 30-year-old, who had previously won in Beijing in 2015.

At the last obstacle, Williams, who was running in lane two for outsiders, triumphed alongside Camacho-Quinn and Harrison.

Williams, though, managed to get ahead of her two more favoured competitors by a little fraction of a second.

For Harrison, it was yet another final disappointment; for Camacho-Quinn, it was an improvement of one spot from previous year.

The 30-year-old former world record holder set a speed of 12.24 seconds in her preliminary round, but she was unable to continue that pace into the championship round.

Harrison now has three silver medals—two Olympic and two world—and a bronze.

Nia Ali, the 2019 winner, and the reigning champion Tobi Amusan of Nigeria, who placed sixth and last, respectively, were never in contention.
