Transfers Okoye Joins Udinese From Watford To Get More Playing Time

Italian club Udinese has completed the singing of Super Eagles goalkeeper Maduka Okoye from Watford.

The 23-year-old Nigerian international only recently transferred from Sparta Rotterdam to Watford for an estimated sum of €5 million.

The 6′ 7″ goalkeeper, who began his career in German football before earning the starting spot at Sparta and breaking into the Nigerian team, came to Watford with great expectations.

Before heading to Vicarage Road, he played 31 matches for Sparta and earned 16 international caps.

However, at the start of the previous campaign, Rob Edwards, the head coach at the time, declared that Daniel Bachmann was his top pick.

Up until the World Cup break, Okoye was frequently on the bench, but when the league season resumed in December, Ben Hamer was appointed as the backup custodian, and Okoye was only named in the matchday squad four more times.

Later, in April, Okoye had a shoulder injury and was forced to miss the rest of the season.

His only two outings for the Hornets came in the FA Cup loss at Reading and the Carabao Cup loss at home to MK Dons.

The route from Watford to Udinese is well-traveled: in summer alone, defender Joao Ferreira was loaned to the Italian team, along with Hasane Kamara, Domingos Quina, and Christian Kabasele.
