Kenya Sofapaka part ways with Burundian Haringingo after five matches

Sofapaka coach Francis Haringingo became the second casualty to lose his job in the 2023-24 FKF Premier League season following a series of poor results.

After Kenya Police moved to fire Francis Baraza and replace him with former Gor Mahia coach Zdavrko Logarusic, Batoto ba Mungu also cracked the whip by parting ways with the Burundian coach after their 2-1 defeat against Nairobi City Stars condemned them to their worst start of the season on Saturday.

Sofapaka President Elly Kalekwa confirmed to People Sports they had reached an agreement to sever ties with Haringingo, who joined the 2009 champions at the start of the season after guiding Rwanda’s Rayon Sports to the Peace Cup trophy, and he will be replaced by Ezekiel Akwana on an interim basis.

“Five matches without a win is not a good way to start the season and we held a meeting with the coach (Haringingo) after the City Stars game, and he voluntarily accepted to resign,” Kalekwa told People Sports, adding: “In his position, Akwana will take charge on an acting capacity and I am confident he has what it takes to haul the team from the position they are in.”

Kalekwa further confirmed the exit of technical director David Ouma though he could not divulge the reason behind his move to quit. “We are also in the market for a new technical director to replace Ouma, who resigned a week ago,” added Kalekwa.

Under Haringingo Sofapaka are winless in the top-flight having kicked off their campaign with a 1-1 draw against Gor Mahia and then lost four straight matches – 1-0 against Bandari, 3-1 against Posta Rangers, 1-0 against Ulinzi Stars and the 2-1 defeat against City Stars.

Sofapaka are currently languishing at the bottom of the 18-team table with one point.
