After suffering a stunning 2-1 defeat at third-division Saarbruecken on Wednesday, Bayern Munich was eliminated from the German Cup in the second round for the third time in four years, all down to a late goal from Marcel Gaus.
Veteran Thomas Mueller gave Bayern the early lead, but Patrick Sontheimer’s goal in first-half injury time gave the home team an equaliser.
Defensor Gaus scored in the sixth minute of injury time to give his team a historic victory when the scores were tied at one goal and it appeared like extra time might be needed.

Matthijs de Ligt, a central defender for Bayern, suffered a possibly critical knee injury early in the game. As a result, the team only has one fit center-back. Bayern go to Borussia Dortmund on Saturday.
Mueller, the six-time Cup winner, appeared to put Bayern on course for an easy win against their less-favored opponents, but shortly after, De Ligt hurt his knee in a tussle and promptly motioned to the sideline.
Joshua Kimmich, a midfielder, was moved into defence due to an injury, which seemed to put Bayern behind a resurgent Saarbruecken.
Then the home team took the lead, with Sontheimer scoring from a ball from Lukas Boeder after Saarbruecken forced a blunder from midfielder Frans Kraetzig.
Harry Kane, the team’s standout striker, was benched by Bayern coach Thomas Tuchel, who instead started Kingsley Coman, Jamal Musiala, and Serge Gnabry.
A scene that will live on in Saarbruecken history was produced by veteran defender Gaus as the England captain warmed up ahead of what appeared to be inevitable extra time.
