UEFA Champions League UCL: Antwerp Bow Out With First Historic Win Over Barcelona

With a surprising 3-2 home win over Barcelona on Wednesday, Royal Antwerp won their first Champions League match.

Although it was insufficient to advance them further in the European club championship this season, the victory gave them their first points in Group H.

After ninety seconds, teenaged Arthur Vermeeren put Antwerp ahead, but Ferran Torres of Barcelona tied the score ten minutes before halftime.

Early in the second half, Vincent Janssen gave Antwerp the lead once more. They maintained it until stoppage time, when Marc Guiu, then 17 years old, attempted to stifle the celebrations at home by scoring an equaliser.

However, Antwerp stormed downfield from the opening kickoff and prevailed thanks to another juvenile substitute, George Ilenikhena.

Antwerp finished bottom of the standings despite not losing all six of their group matches in their Champions League debut.

The 5-3 victory for Porto over Shakhtar Donetsk in the second group game solidified Barcelona’s status as the group champions even though Barcelona lost. The Spanish team, who rested regulars, had already locked up a top-two spot prior to Wednesday’s match.
