AFCON AFCON 2023: Ghana draw with Egypt in four goal thriller

Egypt twice came from behind to draw 2-2 with Ghana in their Group B fixture of the Africa Cup of Nations in Abidjan on Thursday night.

The Black Stars coach Chris Hughton handed a starting berth to Mohammed Kudus and he grabbed it with both hands by scoring a brace in either half. Kudus drilled home from the edge of the box to put Ghana ahead in first-half stoppage time, seconds after Egypt star Mohamed Salah was forced off through injury.

Egypt, seven-times champions of the competition drew level through Omar Marmoush inside 69 minutes but Kudus quickly restored Ghana’s lead in the 71st minute. Three minutes later, Mostafa Mohamed took advantage of a defensive error to smash home the second goal for the Pharaohs of Egypt.

Hughton’s men played a well-drilled game but were let down by some avoidable individual errors. Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Richard Ofori, twice rescued Ghana from conceding the third goal as he made two brilliant saves to keep Ghana in the game.

Both teams had chances came at either end – but there was nothing to pick as the game ended 2-2 in Abidjan. Ghana will go into the final game with loads of confidence following their lofty display on Thursday.
