After 18 months in charge, Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain have announced the departure of head coach Mauricio Pochettino.

“Paris Saint-Germain confirm that Mauricio Pochettino has ended his role at the club,” the statement from PSG read.

Pochettino leaves PSG after leading them to their first league victory as a manager and a record-tying tenth French championship.
This season, the ex-Tottenham Hotspur manager oversaw an unblemished home record in the league, finishing the season with 16 victories in 19 contests.

Even though PSG won the title back, many people considered their Champions League last-16 elimination at the hands of eventual champions Real Madrid to be a big setback.

They let a 2-0 aggregate lead against Madrid slip away, raising significant doubts about Pochettino’s future.

Les Parisiens, who advanced to the semifinals in 2021 and lost to the eventual champions in 2020, had not lost an away Champions League match when leading at the break since 2001.

After five years in charge of the Premier League club and only months after guiding them to the 2019 Champions League final, Pochettino was fired by Spurs in November 2019.

After taking over PSG in January of last year, they finished second to Galtier’s Lille in Ligue 1 and lost to Manchester City in the Champions League semifinals.

But they did win the Coupe de France and the Trophee des Champions, which were Pochettino’s first championships as a manager.

Prior to joining Tottenham in May 2014, the former Argentina defender started his coaching career at Espanyol and spent 18 months there.
