Recently three professional footballers have come out clear on being gay; David Testo, Megan Rapinoe and now Robbie Rogers.
Robbie Rogers, a former midfielder for the United States national team and who played for Leeds in January (15th January, 2013) after a loan at Stevenage in England has declared publicly he is gay.
“I always thought I could hide this secret. Football was my escape, my purpose, my identit
y,” said Rogers.
“Now is my time to step away. It’s time to discover myself away from football.”
Robbie was however embraced throughout the soccer community where other players wrote on social media to either defend him or support him. A former United States defender wrote on twitter, “Brave men like you will make it so that one day there is no need for an announcement.”
“Proud to call you my friend,” Benny Feilhaber also wrote. The FA director of football governance and regulation also added: “Following the announcement by Robbie Rogers on Friday, the FA is trying to make contact with him offering our support.
“Whether Robbies stays in the game or steps away for a break ha has our full backing”.
He however made this announcement in a message posted on his website on Friday.
