Africa Soccer MOZAMBIQUE: Deadlock on Mocambola League kick-off

Mozambique Football League (MFL) has reportedly reservations with kick-off the 2020/21 domestic season with 11 teams.

There are plans to start the season with 11 teams later this month after Mozambique Football Federation (MFM) disqualified Desportivo Maputo, Textafrica de Chimoio and Incomati de Xinavane for failing to meet club licensing requirements.

However, MFL has, according to Opais newspaper of Mozambique warned of the dangers of running a league with 11 teams.

MFL’s official Augusto Pombuana has since engaged MFM to enlighten it on the flip-side of having 11 teams competing in a league saying this can lead to many challenges.

“We would like to have an event with an even number of teams, because there we can have the sporting truth, since in the last three rounds, which must happen at the same time, there would be an outside team, which could cause a situation of falsifying results. But it is a matter that we have to discuss,” the newspaper quoted him as saying.

“We don’t want to change the FMF decision, but what we want to present is the real situation of having an odd number of teams and what this will mean in the final stretch,” Pombuane said.

However, FMF is reported to have made it clear that the league’s kick-off would not depend on MFL’s decision.

MFL, however, insists that it expects a decision to be arrived at the November 22 general assembly for FMF.

“We need the competition calendar for this season and that calendar will only be approved at the FMF General Assembly. If we decide to start Mozambola this month, and the presidents of the Provincial Associations decide that they do not want the season to start now, we will not have done anything, because we will not be in season. That is why we can only hold our General Assembly after the major meeting of the Mozambican Football Federation,” he said.

Costa do Sol are the defending champions of the Mocambola League in Mozambique.
