Liverpool Liverpool Bounce Back To Defeat West Ham And Dethrone Spurs

Liverpool came from behind to defeat West Ham 2-1 and earn their third straight victory thanks to Joel Matip’s spectacular header.

Lucas Paqueta’s spectacular strike gave the Hammers the lead, but Cody Gakpo’s drive brought them back.

Matip scored from a corner to stop West Ham’s recent comeback just after Jarrod Bowen had a goal disallowed for offside.

When Thiago’s arm touched the ball as he fell in the area, West Ham was confident they should have been awarded a late penalty. However, after a VAR review, nothing was granted.

The Hammers entered the game with confidence after a successful week that saw them come from behind to draw 2-2 with Arsenal, advance to the semifinals of the Europa Conference League, and win a resounding 4-0 at Bournemouth to pull farther away from the relegation zone.

After 12 minutes, Paqueta’s strike gave his team the lead, and manager David Moyes, who turned 60 on Tuesday, was once more jubilant.

Prior to firing a rocket from the edge of the box past his international teammate Alisson, the Brazilian twice exchanged passes with Michail Antonio as the latter cut in from the right.

Paqueta’s record £50 million move from Lyon to east London last summer has taken him a painfully long time to adjust.

But the 25-year-old, who is now beginning to look the part in claret and blue, scored his third goal in as many games.

The advantage, though, only lasted five minutes until Trent Alexander-Arnold, again gliding through central midfield, connected with Gakpo from 25 yards out.

The Dutch attacker had time to consider his choices and take a few touches before he decided to shoot a low shot that slid past Lukasz Fabianksi and into the net’s corner.

When Diogo Jota received the ball eight yards away, Liverpool could have taken the lead, but the Portuguese forward’s shot went over the crossbar.

Jota then wasted a header, after scoring four goals in his previous two games.

However, West Ham continued to pose a threat, and just before the break, Virgil van Dijk made an important play to stop Antonio from converting Said Benrahma’s cross at the far post.

The home team believed they had regained the lead when Bowen pounced on Paqueta’s through ball, dribbled past Van Dijk, and blasted into the corner, but a VAR review revealed the winger was just slightly offside.

Instead, after Fabianski stopped Matip’s clear-cut effort in the 67th minute, Liverpool quickly took the lead.

The defender remained standing for the subsequent corner, and he dutifully headed Andy Robertson’s cross beyond Fabianski.

West Ham attempted to equalize, but Maxwel Cornet missed and Tomas Soucek missed with a header.

Following Thiago’s stumble in the area, Moyes yelled angrily at the fourth official, but Liverpool pulled through to pass Tottenham and go up to sixth.
