COSAFA Cosafa Cup: Lesotho defeat Mozambique as Mauritius stun Angola

Lesotho remained on course to qualify for the quarter-finals of Hollywoodbets SA Cosafa Cup in South Africa after defeating Mozambique 1-0 at Princess Magogo Stadium on Monday.

In the Group C contest, Lesotho, who were the better side from the opening minutes, were forced to wait until the 34th minute when Neo Mokhachane scored what turned out to be the winner. The slim victory ensured Lesotho kept their 100 percent winning run in the tournament as they won the opener 2-0 against Mauritius.

However, Mauritius deserved to win the game by a wider margin, Mokhachane twice hit the woodwork in the first half and they had another chance courtesy of Thabo Lesaoana, whose left-footed effort was punched out for a fruitless corner by goalkeeper Victor Guambe.

Meanwhile, Mauritius caused a major upset after edging out tournament favourites Angola 1-0 in another fixture at the same venue. Marie Mathieu Francois stunned Angola with only eight minutes played when he weaved past their defence before unleashing a rocket that flew past keeper Nsesani Emanuel Simao.

Angola under coach Jose Jorge Fernandes do Amaral tried their level best to draw level but Mauritius backline stayed focused and twice denied Osvaldo Kevine Andre Moseka, who was later replaced in the second half for Luis Venancio Direito.

Lesotho are topping Group C with six points from two matches, Mauritius are second with three, Angola third with one point, the same as Mozambique. Angola will now face Lesotho in their final group fixture while Mauritius will come up against Mozambique.
