China had been the aggressors in a match that didn’t live up to high heights until the thrilling conclusion, led by the vivacious 22-year-old Zhang Linyan.

China was an early leader in women’s football, coming second in 1999.

They believed their unexpected victory at the Asian Cup last year would spark a comeback to their old glories.

Star striker Wang Shuang unexpectedly started off the bench as a determined China took control of the opening exchanges by frightening a frazzled Denmark with their speed on the left wing.

However, they fell short due to poor execution.

Their greatest opportunity came from Zhang, who forced Lene Christensen of Denmark to make a low save to her left.

Pernille Harder, the captain and a World Cup rookie throughout the full lineup for Denmark, was forceful upon her recovery from hamstring surgery.

However, Denmark was unable to break through a tough China defence, and their anger erupted when Rikke Sevecke was sent off for shirt pulling shortly before halftime.

After the break, Wang returned and made an immediate impact.

He launched a long-range shot but Christensen blocked it.

Both teams pressed hard as the game progressed, but in the 52nd minute, Denmark’s Josefine Hasbo missed a header with the goal at her mercy.

Denmark exerted strong pressure, and it paid off when Vangsgaard rose to the occasion in the closing moments.
