UEFA EUROPA LEAGUE UEL: Brighton Hold Marseille As West Ham Set English Record

In a thrilling Europa League Group B match on Thursday, Brighton & Hove Albion rallied from two goals down to draw 2-2 at Olympique de Marseille thanks to two second-half goals and a late penalty.

Despite Marseille scoring twice in less than 90 seconds, Brighton managed to earn their first-ever point in European football. However, the English team’s single point kept them in last place in the group.

After tying host Ajax Amsterdam 1-1, AEK Athens is in first place with four points.

Chancel Mbemba scored the opening goal for Marseille with a calm finish into the far corner, then soon after the break, Brighton’s Lewis Dunk failed to clear the ball, allowing Amine Harit to provide a pinpoint low cross to Jordan Veretout, who then guided the ball under Jason Steele, the goalie for Brighton.

After 54 minutes, Pascal Gross of Brighton gave the game new life with a side-foot finish off of Kaoru Mitoma’s cutback.

When Tariq Lamptey was fouled by Jonathan Clauss two minutes from the end, Brighton took control of the game and gained a penalties, which Joao Pedro converted.

West Ham United extended their strong start in Group A with a 2-1 victory at SC Freiburg on Thursday. Lucas Paqueta and Nayef Aguerd scored the goals.

With six points, David Moyes’ club leads the group, six ahead of Freiburg’s three.

Atalanta defeated Sporting 2-1 in Portugal and took the lead in Group D after scoring twice in the first ten minutes.

Rangers’ interim managing tenure under Steven Davis got off to a rocky start in a 2-1 loss to Aris Limassol in Cyprus.

Real Betis needed a late goal from Isco to defeat Sparta Prague 2-1 at home.
