Manager Erik ten Hag hopes that Manchester United’s incredible 4-3 comeback victory over Liverpool in extra time on Sunday in the FA Cup quarterfinals would serve as the impetus to turn around the team’s Premier League fortunes.

After Marcus Rashford equalised eight minutes earlier, Amad Diallo scored the game’s winning goal in the 121st minute, almost blowing the roof off Old Trafford and securing the FA Cup winners’ position in the semi-finals against Coventry City, a lower division team.

“This could be that (pivotal) moment where the team can really believe, and the energy too, that they can do amazing things,” delighted Dutchman Ten Hag said.

“And I think when you can beat Liverpool in the way we did, that you can beat any opponent, so it’s up to us to prove the point. I said this also on Friday (in the pre-game press conference) — and today we did.”

Although they still have a game in hand, United is nine points behind Aston Villa in fourth place in the race for a Champions League berth for the upcoming season. This puts United in sixth place in the standings, far behind Liverpool in second place by a whopping 17 points.

This season, United has certainly been a dull place to be on many nights, but this match on Sunday will go down as a classic.

“When it’s Manchester Untied against Liverpool, it’s one of the world’s best football matches. It is historical,” Ten Hag said. “I thought the first 35 minutes were the best I have seen from my team this season.”

Next month, Manchester City, the FA Cup winners and rivals of United, will play Chelsea in the other semi-final at Wembley.
