Bundesliga Wolfsburg Appoints Hasenhuttl As New Manager

Ralph Hasenhuttl was named coach of VfL Wolfsburg on Sunday, just hours after Niko Kovac was fired following the team’s 3-1 home loss to Augsburg on Saturday—their third straight Bundesliga loss.

The Austrian Hasenhuettl will make his formal presentation on Monday. He coached RB Leipzig and Ingolstadt in the Bundesliga before spending four years at Southampton in the Premier League until 2022.

Marcel Schaefer, the managing director of Wolfsburg, stated earlier on Sunday that a new coach was required “to give the team a new impulse, in order to stabilise the situation”.

With their last league victory coming on December 16, Wolfsburg has now lost 11 straight Bundesliga games.

The Wolves’ loss on Saturday dropped them to 14th place in the league.

“(Hasenhuettl) signed a longer contract with the club and will lead training from Tuesday onwards,”

Wolfsburg said. It gave no details on the duration of the deal.

Former Croatian international Kovac, who also served as Bayern Munich’s coach from 2018 to 19, took over at Wolfsburg prior to the 2022–2023 season and guided them to an eighth-place result in his first year of leadership.

Though the team is now six points above the relegation playoff spot with 25 points, this season has been anything but successful.
