AFCON AFCON2023Q: Namibia Targets Top Of The Table Place In Group C

When Namibia plays Burundi on Tuesday afternoon at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam, there is a potential that they may not only go to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, but also take first place in Group C.

The game will begin at 3 CAT (SA, GMT+2).

The Brave Warriors lived true to their moniker by putting out two valiant efforts against Cameroon in the March qualifying matches to earn four points and maintain their perfect record.

The Indomitable Lions, who defeated the Swallows 1-0 in their group opener, were predicted to win the competition after Collin Benjamin’s team opened their qualification campaign with a 1-1 draw.

Namibia now leads the five-time Afcon champions by one point with one game remaining after a 1-1 draw in Yaounde on March 24 and a shocking 2-1 triumph in Johannesburg four days later.

Bonfils-Caleb Bimenyimana, an intimidating striker who had a successful rookie season with Kaizer Chiefs, scored Tanzania’s equalizer in the 88th minute on matchday 1. Benjamin will be cautious of the threat offered by the East Africans in Tanzania.

But the former Namibian international has urged his team to take advantage of the chance and secure a spot in the continental championship for just the fourth time in their history.

“We have the ball in our hands to qualify for the nations cup. All our players are fit and in good spirits ahead of this match,” Benjamin said.
In order for Etienne Ndayiragije’s team to have a chance of traveling to the Ivory Coast next year, they must win their final two games after earning just one point from their first two games.

The Swallows have previously defeated the Brave Warriors, triumphing 3-1 in the Afcon 2017 qualifying matches after losing the rematch by the same scoreline a few days earlier.
